Sarah Beaty, mezzo-soprano, has been hailed as “the model of bel canto clarity and brilliance” by ClevelandClassical. Despite her affinity for bel canto opera and Medieval music, Sarah’s true passion is contemporary opera. She was recently named an inaugural Company Member of The Industry, Yuval Sharon’s experimental opera company in Los Angeles. She has collaborated with The Industry on multiple world premieres including “Invisible Cities,” “Hopscotch,” “Galileo,” and “Bonnie and Clyde,” as well as “In C” at the Hammer Museum and John Cage’s “Europeras 1 & 2 “ with the LA Phil at Sony Pictures Studio. In June 2019, Sarah will return to the LA Phil for a landmark new production of Meredith Monk’s “Atlas” directed by Yuval Sharon.

Other contemporary opera credits include a world premiere as the title role in “Clara,” a new opera by Victoria Bond about the life and loves of Clara Schumann, on the Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival in NYC’s Symphony Space. In 2013 she premiered “Prometheus Bound” with the Center for New Performance at the Getty Villa Amphitheater. She is a founding member of Blue Streak, a contemporary chamber ensemble based in Cleveland, OH, directed by composer Margaret Brouwer.
Also a lover of (very) early music, Sarah co-founded Vocatrix, an LA-based ensemble which brings together medievalists in performances of the music of Hildegard. She recently reprised her role as Castitas in Hildegard’s rarely performed “Ordo Virtutum” with Vocatrix on the Berkeley Early Music Festival, and their performance on the Monday Evening Concert Series was praised in the LA Times by Mark Swed saying it was “sung with blinding luminosity.”

Sarah has been heard as Diana in Cavalli’s Baroque opera “La Calisto.” Other opera roles include Dryad in Ariadne auf Naxos, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Mozart’s Serpetta, Dorabella, Second Lady and Cherubino, Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor, Flora in La Traviata, among others.  Sarah has been a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, CityMusic Cleveland Orchestra, Pacific Chorale, the Camerata of LA, National Chorale, and has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Disney Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the National Opera Center, and Avery Fisher Hall.

In 2012, she spent 6 months in Macao, China, as a featured opera singer at The Venetian. Sarah is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and is also an accomplished violinist and flutist. In LA she regularly sings with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Pacific Opera Project, Pacific Chorale, and at St. James Episcopal Church. When she’s not performing, Sarah’s other passion is teaching private voice lessons at her studio in Glendale.
